Club installs new officers

The Rotary Club of Hicksville-Jericho installed its most recent president, officers and board of directors on July 11. Elizabeth Goldfrank was installed as president by State Legislator Rose Walker. Also installed as officers were Ed Moffett, vice president; Donna Rivera-Downey, secretary; and Gerry Poli, treasurer.

Members of the board of directors installed were Tom Howell, Ennio Lattini Dr. Irwin Gross, James Grossman, William Schuckmann, and Dr. James Bentson.

The executive board of the Hicksville Jericho Rotary being sworn in; Gerry Poli, Ed Moffett, Donna Rivera-Downey, Rose Walker, Elizabeth Goldfrank, and Past President Dr. James Bentson.The Hicksville Community Council held its 42nd Annual Awards Dinner on June 13, honoring people and organizations that exemplify the meaning of Community Service. The 2013 Dick Evers Community Service Award was presented to Donna Rivera-Downey, a lifelong Hicksville resident. Rivera-Downey’s interest in public service emerged during her own years as a Girl Scout growing up in Hicksville, and was honed and tested through her involvement with the Hicksville-Jericho Rotary Club and as a Girl Scout leader.

Rivera-Downey is a past president and current member of the Hicksville-Jericho Rotary Club, a past assistant district governor for Rotary District 7250, and the Youth Exchange Chair for Rotary District 7250. She is in her second elected term on the Hicksville Library Board of Trustees, now serving as board president. Rivera-Downey serves as chief marketing and communications officer for the Girl Scouts of Nassau County.

The Hicksville-Jericho Rotary has been proudly serving the Hicksville-Jericho community since 1951, providing scholarships to local high school students, supporting the Hicksville Boys and Girls Club, the local food pantry, the Gift of Life and many more charitable projects.

Hicksville Public Library on Literacy Day

In celebration of Rotary International’s designation of September as Literacy Month, members of the Hicksville-Jericho Rotary Club sponsored a “Story Time” at the Hicksville Public Library on Literacy Day, September 8, 2005.
 
Youngsters from the community were invited to hear their favorite stories read to them by members of the Hicksville-Jericho Rotary Club. Goody bags were passed out to those attending, “Dora the Explorer” seemed to be the hit of the day. Arrangements for this fun time was arranged by Stephanie Sokenis, Director of Community Service.
 
Rotary International is a international service club whose object is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise, development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service, maintain high ethical standards in business, recognize worthiness of all useful occupations and dignify each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to service society. Rotarians endeavor to advance international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
